About Ashta Chowka Bara
Ashta Chowka Bara is an exciting and engaging indoor game that is popular in India. It involves rolling cowrie shells to determine the next move. This game not only tests players’ patience, strategy, and critical thinking skills, but it is also a great way to bring family and friends together and create lasting memories.
- To start the game, each player places their pawns on their respective sides. A pawn can only enter the board when a player rolls the required number of cowrie shells.
- Pawns move along a fixed anticlockwise concentric path around the board, starting from the player’s entry point. The number rolled on the cowrie shells determines the number of spaces a pawn can move.
- If a player lands on a space occupied by an opponent’s pawn, the opponent’s pawn is sent back to its starting point. Capturing an opponent’s pawn is mandatory to enter the second inner circle and follow the directional arrows.
- Players earn an extra turn:
- If they capture an opponent’s pawn or
- Roll a 4 (4 shells), 8 (8 shells), 6 (6 shells), or 12 (12 shells).
- Certain spaces, marked with Rangoli-printed blocks in the outer and second circles, are designated as safe zones. You cannot capture opponent’s pawn in these spaces. However, the innermost circle does not have safe zones.
- Winner – Pawns must reach the center square with an exact roll. The player must roll the exact number requires to reach the center. If the number exceeds, the player must wait untill the exact number is rolled during their turns. The first player to move all 6 (or 4, depending on the variant) pawns to the center square wins the game.
